Question Planning on starting next year, a lot to learn

Hey everybody at Snowboardingforum! So I am a senior in high school from California (I don't get snow here), but I am going to college in either wyoming, montana, oregon, or washington next year and I really want to start snowboarding.

So some questions:

What are all the items of gear I will need to buy (this includes clothing for snow, pretty much anything you wear snowboarding).

How much does all that usually cost?

How do I determine the size of my board?

What are good board brands?

When do people usually age out of snowboarding?

If I start next year, will I ever be good (I want to be competitive, I've been a skater and will likely have the basic jist of it)

Also, I know this is a longshot, I just like to know, but how good does one have to be to become sponsored?
Thanks everyone!
