A shorter board is generally used for riding park, that's what the board size calculators don't really take into account. The size you've been recommended for is probably an all mountain board, so you ride a bit of park, bit of pow, bit of groomers runs.

Since this is your first time to the snow, i recommend you hire a board, around the 161 cm mark like your board calc says, buying a board can come later, you don't know what your riding style is yet.
