effective edge ? what do the numbers mean ?

I have a a question about board specs , what do the numbers mean for effective edge ? Ex I have a 2011 gnu carbon credit and the effective edge is 119mm trying to figure out what it means I just ordered a Lib. Tech T Rice pro 155cm and has the same effective edge being a 1cm difference on the board Length maybe a stupid question but I'm curious I would appreciate some feed back ... Thank you ...1 more question is there a difference in a 2011 BTX on a gnu CC to a 2014 Gnu CC ? According to one the 11' is a rocker where as 14' is listed as camber / rocker / camber me It looks like the 2011 is the same as the 2014 am I am idiot or do they have there facts messed up ?
