at 190 lbs I think you need bigger than 154 board. 154cm is for around 160lbs ish. so I would say a 158cm will fit your 190lbs weight better. and no it will not be too long for you cuz its mostly depending on weight. if you not doing park, longer will give you better grip in less than perfect conditions.
what Academy board are you looking at and whats your price range. for starting out people tend to recommend rocker boards cuz they are easy to learn on and less edge catching but if you do freeride a lot you will grow out of it very quickly. so pick a hybrid camber or just go camber. riding camber board will make you know the discipline of riding make you a better rider.
