Insulated or shell?

If you want warm, insulated jackets are warm, but they're not too versatile. Might be too warm during early or late season.

If you want something more versatile, a shell is the way to go. Base layer, plus a hoodie or fleece for colder mid season days. Base layer and just the jacket for warmer early/late season days.

Where do you ride, and what are normal conditions?

As far as brands, Quicksilver makes some nice jackets, as does Volcom.
