No, you really need to learn to toe side turns to ride well. When poeple have trouble doing this it usually an anxiety about leaning down the hill. Check out the how to section above; there is is a complete instructional writen about turns.

Whithout watching you ride, I will guess and say you may be doing the classic thing of as soon as the board starts to point downhill, you lean back. The body wants to position itself so you stand vertical against gravity. You need to ride so you make an upside down T in relation to the snow. If you are on a 20 degree slope and you stand so that your head points straight up, you are actually leaning back 20 degrees. When you do that, there is no way the nose of the board has any weight on it and you will never get the edge to engage with the snow to initiate and continue a turn.

Try leading with your shoulder and as you begin to initiate your turn, rotate your upper body a little and point your shoulder in the directiong you want to go. Flex you front knee a little more and pressure your toe edge starting with the front foot and following through with the rear foot as the turn is established.
