The main reason Berthoud Ski Area went under was the lodge. I guess the plumbing, specifically the drainage was a huge problem there. Which is weird, being on top of a pass and all. Anyway, they could never get the problems fixed. Evidently the Sol Vista owners spent upwards of $300k on it and never got the results they needed.
If Sol Vista hadn't of stepped in Bert would have never re opened as a ski area. The guy who spent all the money on getting operational after the early 90's closure died in a car wreck driving home from the pass. They stepped in, got it running, and would have been successful except for the fact that the year they started operating was the first year of the pass wars. People weren't paying for Bert when they could get a season pass for $200 at Winterpark, Breck, Keystone, Coppper, etc. Bert was charging $400 for their pass which was cheap, the season previous...
