Default Boot fitting problem

I got a pair of '09 Burton SLX boots, I tried walking around them in the store for about 5 minutes to see if they would remain comfortable. EThe worst that happen was some slight discomfort in that ball-like portion of the tibia that jets out:

I was advised that the boots are stiff at first, but are broken in. However, I tried breaking them in for about an hour just hanging around the apartment and that area started coming under some pressure and started to hurt more than before.

Do they need breaking in, reconfiguring the laces on the outside, inside, or both, or should I just try to return them or resell them on eBay? The problem is more pronounced in the left foot that the right, so I suspect it may be a lacing problem, but I did not feel much of a change when I loosened them a hair.
