I don't know much about the sherlock, and since it's a new board there doesn't seem to be many reviews on it. Out of the few reviews some people say it's really soft while others are saying it's stiffer than they thought. I just want to know if the edge hold is at least as good as the custom v rocker if not better. After reading a bunch of reviews about the custom, it seems like that could be a perfect fit for him. But if the sherlock is just as good, then I would rather get him the board he has been talking about.

The sherlock is one of the best burton boards that you can buy devoted to freeride. I've never ridden one so i can't speak to it's stiffness. But it's got some excellent tech behind it. The custom is more of an all mountain ride. If you're sure he's solely dedicated to the free-riding aspect of snowboarding and not the park, i'd snag him the sherlock and give yourself a pat on the back for giving the guy a sweet deck.
