They should have taught you how to stop then... everybody that I've talked to that has taken a lesson said they had to "skate" in a circle for about 10 mins to get used to one-footing... then strap in and learn how to balance/stop.... Maybe it's just me but I think stopping is kinda important
On another note... I really had trouble heelside for a couple days.. like stated above I found out that I was planting to hard with my back foot... which was making me go fakie... which in turn would make me indo..
