Some basic back country questions

I'm interested in what land you can just go snowboard on in the Rockies (or anywhere else in the US). I'm not really even thinking about bowls, just easier lower (safer?) stuff, powder runs.

Can you pretty much just hike onto any mountain that isn't private property?

Can you hike and snowboard land in State Parks? (Give the local rules from your area if you want)

Are there just massive areas of land that anybody can use for free?

What about all the land that heli-ski outfits have access to?
