Humidity's effect on snowboard

Not sure exactly where to post this question, but here goes.

I bought a new NS Premier F1 in early January when I was at Vail. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana. I was told that in order to protect the board from potentially damaging humidity or moisture, I needed to fully coat the base in wax until my next visit. My first question is, how accurate is this assessment? Additionally, is it ok if I scrape, buff, and brush my board the night before departure, or would the potential for damage even in that window be large?

I've googled the topic many times, and I can't seem to find anything close to an answer. Thanks guys.
