Default Rupery Murdoch forced to shut down newspaper

Not sure if this has gained any attention where you guys are, but in the UK, one of Rupert Murdoch's national newspapers, the News of the World, has been at the middle of an epic scandal in recent weeks involving phone hacking.

Previously, the hacking was claimed to have been the work of 1 'rogue' journalist who hired a private investigator to hack into the mobile phones of the royal family. Both were investigated and jailed a few years ago. The story has never really gone away and only got worse with various celebrities understood to have been victims of hacking. Many of them susbsequently took legal action of their own (disappointingly, a number allowed their silence to be bought).

The scandal then unveiled corrupt practices between the newspaper, the Metropolitan Police and Scotland Yard, with police officers being paid bribes for information which then featured in a number of articles. Some officers and detectives enjoyed a very cosy relationship and went on to acquire lucrative work for the paper or it's affiliates.

But now deplorable levels have truly been reached. The murdered teenager Milly Dowler had her phone hacked, messages accessed and then deleted to free up space for more messages. This was during the period after her disappearance when a national hunt was underway to locate her. That the messages had been accessed gave false hope to her family that she was still alive when in fact it later transpired she had been abducted, murdered and disposed of by that point by a serial killer.

The families of the victims in the 7/7 attacks were also hacked. The families of the the Soham girls who were abducted, abused and murdered by a paedophile working as a janitor at their school were also hacked in the aftermath.

And now the widow's of soldier's killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are believed to have been hacked as well as the email account of one of the soldier's who died. 4,000 people are understood to have been victims.

The scandal has provoked a great deal of anger at the News of the World with a number of companies withdrawing or suspending advertising. Rebekah Brooks, who was editor at the time of the hacking, and is now chief executive at News International is refusing to resign.

So this afternoon, the Murdochs took the step of shutting down the newspaper. This Sunday's edition will be the last of what is one of the biggest and most profitable tabloids in the UK... I may also add it was one of the biggest piles of crap on the market.

All of the staff were understandably furious and allegedly formed a lynch mob in anger at Brooks.
