I'm by no means an expert, but we are about 5 miles from Canada so we used to run across the border to pick up Cohibas and some other cubans back in the day. I have had better cigars for sure.
I think the general sentiment among aficionados is that Cuban cigars aren't really all that impressive. Funny thing about nationalizing the industry... most of the families left and opened up shop in other Caribbean nations. But they are still popular on a cache that is 30-40 years old when they were the industry-leader.
