How do I know when I've probed someone

Humour aside.....

Once you've got an idea of where a burial victim is, and your probing, what does it feel like? Is it something really obvious and 'I'll know when I've got someone' or is it easy to get confused when penetrating different types of snow or hitting other debris?

I've never had to do this, but I'd like to get an idea of what to feel for. Could I simulate the feeling with a buried backpack or something?
