When you say change direction, do you mean change from your heelside to toe edge, or vice versa? Changing direction while on the same edge is not linking turns. Usually it is called sideslipping.

Also carving is commonly misused, it is a more advanced technique. If you are linking your turns, but you skid through the turn it is called a skidded turn.

Depending on whether you are actually linking turns or carving there are very different things you can do to improve.
