I find the motion and balance to be very similar to snowboarding, more so than freeboarding. I feel like longboarding in the off season for me helps with balance so that when I get back on the slopes I'm not as rusty. They are a blast to cruse around on and you can do awesome slides after you start getting a little more advanced.
I would second mountain biking also. Or if you have a downhill mountain bike course around it's so much fun.
