I've spray painted lots of boards. Sand them first with 120 grit sand paper. I've had good luck with with cheap paint from home depot. Auto parts stores have a bigger selection of color. I painted one white and used sharpe and it stayed good for a long time. It didn't chip off for me, it might if you sprayed over a gloss top sheet, but that's why I sanded first.
