Yeah, it was a whacky idea that did`nt work so well. In 1951, they built a tram from Govy to Timberline Lodge using old city busses hung from cables. There is talk today still of a viable tram connecting Govy with Timberline and there has even been talk of an extension across White River Canyon to the top of Vista at Mt. Hood Meadows. Besides Forest Service authorizations, the greatest challenge to such a proposal would be the intense winds that occurr on Vista, making such a tram unreliable. Still, some pretty interesting history. Here are a few pics of the old buggar and some links to several Portland and Mt. Hood historical sites.

Skiway(1951)
The original skiway started service in 1951 linking Government Camp with Timberline lodge. Built using technology developed for the lumber industry, the skiway was basically a converted bus hanging on cables. The promoters envisioned extending the skiway to the top of Mt. Hood eventually.

The ride cost $0.75 when it opened and took 30 minutes to get to Timberline Lodge. It was a terrible business proposition from the beginning since there were normal busses that went from Government Camp to Timberline Lodge that cost $0.50 and also took 30 minutes. In 1956 the skiway closed down, and in 1961 the system was dismantled.

The Skiway path was 3 miles long, started at an altitude of 3700ft, and ended at an altitude of 6000ft.
