I have been in Vail in two different occasions.
Hotel: My best recommendation for the hotel is to stay in Frisco and drive to Vail, that would be cheapest way of doing it (thats how we did it). We stayed in the Alpine at an a very reasonable price and the hotel was actually very nice.
Lift tickets and parking: Shit that place is expensive, parking over 20 bukcs a day and lift ticket are expensive. If you are going to be there for more than a week get a season pass and that way you could save money. The restaurants are expesive you are better off bringing some energy bars or sandwiches
Terrain: The front of the mountain is like every other resort in my opinion nothing special. Vail is all about the back bowls and Blue sky Basin, once you been there nothing else in the world compares to the solitude and quality of the terrain back there. I heard that it's the closest to heli/snowcat skiing with out the extra $$$. Especially blue sky the terrain there is unbelievable you can find it all in there, and there is plenty of powder stashes even after weeks with no fresh snow.
The one thing that I was not crazy about was the amount of asshole skiers that the resort had, too many if you ask me. Maybe 10 skiers to 1 rider, I never seen anything like that in my life.
Will I ever go back there? you bet, there is not another resort that I have been to that compare to Vail, (I have been in about 15 resorts).
But remember something your experience will always depend on the conditions of the snow, sad but true.
I have not been in Whistler but I imagine that it compares to Vail in a similar way with the amount of terrain they have, but of what I have heard they are equally expensive, if not more.
