Dude first thing you need to learn is wind window and kite control. It would be a good idea to invest in a trainer kite besides being fun it is a great learning tool.
Apparebtly there is a difference between a kiteboard and a wakeboard so if you haven't bougHt a wakeboard yet then don't and buy the kiteboard instead assuming that you are going to stick with the kite over the wakeboard.
Also I was the same way about the whole no lessons bit, but I really think that it would help with progression. I am gunna try and take one this year so maybe they can help me with my upwind riding. I can ride down wind no problem on the mountainboard I still need to work on water riding. But I also know how to fly the kite. But the upwind eludes me still.
So what Kind of kite were you looking at, and how big? Personally I own a 04' or 05' 15M Best Yarga. i bought mine the same way your looking to do it because it make no sense to buy a new one for your first kite because your more than likely going to thrash it.
