Where I ride, it's usually the beginners that aren't wearing helmets (can't figure that one out).
You didn't say whether you are in a pillowy-soft powder area or in the East, but either way you might appreciate some padded shorts to protect your tailbone. You'll fall and either bang your head or your butt and when you don't land on those it will be your wrists or knees. You might even want knee pads.
Sounds like a lot? The less it hurts, the more confidence you get and the faster you will progress, which is essential when you're first starting out.
As for detuning, it depends on the board -- camber you can do like in the vids if you want, rocker or otherwise - no.
