OHHHHHH you're talking about detuning the tip and tail!!! Yes I was 100% not joking about detuning the edges. That is only something you do if it's going to be a rail board, and it's not reversible.
Detuning the tip and tail is another thing all together. I've done very light detuning on the tips of some of my boards, and none on others. I don't really see the tip and tail as a place where you're normally "catching edges" so I don't quite agree with that article.
So in summary:
- go for as much protective gear as you can
- take as many lessons as you can
- have fun and the rest will follow (don't worry about little things like detuning)
