Sorry by read I meant like just check out the forums, they should help you with alot of brands, also perusing REI's website covers alot of major tech in gear like waterproofing and whatnot.

For books the one I always hear to get is "Staying Alive in Avalance Terrain" but not sure the author, haven't started on this bit of my own quest yet.
