Seriously, it's almost never about changing the other person's mind
at the time. And for most people that's the same as
never. But over time, if you have enough arguments and find yourself on the defensive enough times, and if you're honest enough, you'll start to rethink some of your assumptions. I know that over the last couple of decades I've moved steadily to the left. Back in the Preston Manning days, I was a staunch Reform supporter (for our US members, the Conservative party used to refer to the Reform party as fascists... ). It's also often about the audience. Snowolf and Jdang may never change each others' minds, but their argument can affect the opinions of those in the audience who may not have made up their minds (or petrified them) yet.
