If you like thrillers, I can recommend all 4 books by S.J. Bolton and the Simon Beckett "The Chemistry of Death" trilogy.

The Swarm (Frank Schätzing) - 700 pages fiction thriller

A short Story of nearly Everything (Bill Bryson) - interesting and amusing

Bad Science (Ben Goldacre) - funny and interesting

Kolyma Tales (Varlam Shalamov) - deeply disturbing (but written in a wonderfull light language) autobiography of a Soviet Gulag survivor. In my opinion a must-read. In German, it was published in an series of 4 books. The first one ("Spuren im Schnee - Erzählungen aus Kolyma Band 1") I'd recommend most. The other ones are a bit heavy.

An other amazing book is "Buntschatten und Fledermäuse" by Axel Brauns. Its an autobiographic story of an autist. Dont know if its already translated.
