There are some really good deals too. I suppose it all comes down to how it got there.
Yeah prices are pretty bad down here, even after allowing for exchange rate. Sometimes there's some good sale stuff but most gear (hardware and outerwear) tends to be a lot more expensive than in the US / Canada.
Take the 2014 Burton Cartels - I think the US$ RRP is like $250 or something. Versus NZ$450 at most places. At an exchange rate of 0.78 USD / NZD that's still a complete gouge in NZD terms. And Burton is one the most widely available brands in NZ too so you'd expect there to be a bit of competition on price.
It's the same with a lot of stuff though. A lot of importers use freight as an excuse but no way does freight make that big of a difference on each individual item. Some of the websites that have started up recently are a lot more competitive but don't always have a wide range of brands.
