Default Japan in April?

I am planning to go to Japan in mid-late April for business. Just want to make sure there's nothing open/nothing worth staying for at that time.

Kagura up in Niigata is open until the end of May, and April should still be good. Chances of some new snowfall around that time, but it wont be like February powder.

I generally keep boarding until the end of April at least, there is one place in Yamagata (Gassan) that doesnt OPEN until mid-April, and goes until end of August. Its wet, slushy, full of skiers and hard to get to, but at least its open

Keep in mind Japan is having a terrible season and the base is way down compared to usual. Imo the season will wind up early this year unless some kind of miracle happens.

Considering the MASSIVE dump we got over the last weekend, bringing most of the Kanto area to a halt, there should be no shortage of snow this April. I'm hoping to get out to the Kagura/Naeba area this weekend, just as long as the roads are not still chock-a-block, and that the people stranded in their small villages actually have food and supplies. That's how bad the snow was this time.

Was just there last weekend (caught one of the last shinkansens out of tokyo before they stopped). So much pow i started questioning why people like it so much. Had to rescue my wife several times when she came to a stop in waist deep areas. All the parks were closed, could barely see where runs started and ended. Was actually happy when they announced they were grooming one of the green runs!

I love Kagura as a resort, but it was too much. I will go back late march/april for hopefully a bit more manageable snow lol

Crazy. When did you get back/how long did it take for the shinkansen to start moving again?

I was there for the weekend. By Sunday evening the trains were moving, albeit slowly. Took us from 7:30 until 11:30pm to get back.

Was a bit of a risky move, dashing out there as soon as we heard roads (i.e. buses) were being closed. We kinda just thought "I'm sure they will have it all working again by the end of the weekend." We almost had the resort to ourselves though. So many runs were completely devoid of people.

Good thing you could make it back. My gf and I were heading to Nagano from Gunma on friday night. We made it about 100kms, only to have the highway closed off, and then the smaller local road blocked by a truck which had slipped. We tried taking an even smaller road, which ended up being both narrow and steep, and when the snow got too deep, we had to make a u-turn (which thank God I managed), then had to drive back another 100kms or so in the complete whiteout. Turns out we made a good call, because our other friends who were heading out to Nagano from Tokyo, got stuck in Hachioji until the next afternoon (with a 3 year old kid in the car).

Be safe. I still hope I can go this weekend though :P

By car! Damn yeah good luck; i know a lot of the bus tours are cancelled until Friday afternoon. Hopefully the roads are cleared by Saturday.

Feels like it was a slow winter, and then mother nature decided to play catch-up over a 10 day period.
