I am not sure how well it would work since a conventional EPIRB transmits on VHF I believe in the marine band. Coast Guard would naturally have EPIRB detection. Inland, I don`t know if a S&R aircraft would even be monitoring those bands. The benefit of the 406 Mhz PLB is these things are never out of range. You press a button and the orbiting satellite sends the alert to NASA where you are registered. They in turn notify S&R in your local area. It`s like On Star for your body.

thanks snowolf, that doesnt seem like a bad idea when im out on the kayak fishing, i've got an IR strobe that gets activated once submerged but it doesnt transmit just flashes.
