Bert...

Winter has returned the past 2-3 weeks in Colorado. Conditions have been just fine in the backcountry. Well, minus the avalanche danger which is crazy this year. Got a surprise powder day on Berthoud pass this past Sunday. Anywhere from 6 inches to over a foot depending on aspect, sun exposure, winds, and those sort of things. It was the super light blower that Colorado is known for.

Carl pretty happy about how the day turned out.

And enjoying the pow.

A lot of hucking went down for sure.

No one had any complaints about this day.

Finding powder this weekend may be problematic. Looks like the moisture maker has dried up until after this weekend with warmer temps. Though I do have a few ideas where I may still find the good stuff.

Looks like a good time. Always glad to see more TR on this site. I always approve of a pow trip. Hasn't been enough this year.

Looks like some ace snow you guys got there. We're heading out to Asahidake this weekend, hopefully we'll find some stashes around here.

BTW Is that dude in the 5th pic sporting a split?

How is the snow on Bert holding up?

Forgive my avy-noobness, but isn't this late season weather good as it gets the freeze/thaw cycles going?

I was in Washington for the past two weekends, so I really don't know about Bert. I am sure a lot of the south facing stuff has melted out. You are correct that the freeze/thaw cycle helps solidify the snow pack. Only if it gets below freezing at night. Which I believe the last few nights have. So North facing lines should be good. Timing is the key issue. You probably want to be done with your tour by noon these days, before the snow gets too wet. Once water percolates into that depth hoar layer, it'll be fairly easy to trigger a big avalanche. On the flip side, water percolating down there, then freezing should help reduce that layer too.

Hopefully, I'll get the Washington trip report up here in a day or two. I took over 2k photos, and have gotten through about 2/3 of them. Got a fair amount of video too. Let's just say, it was rad.
