Default Sizing issue with bindings (aka, was it a bad purchase?)

Hi all,

I'd like to have you guys opinion on a sizing issue I have with newly purchased bindings.

I got a fair deal on a 2013 board and got some Burton Custom bindings to go along. My boots are 2010 Burton Ruler boots, size 10.5. The vendor insisted on selling me size Large bindings (size 10+), even though size medium (8-11) would have been fine, in my opinion. This is especially true since I already have what I assume is medium size 2004 Custom bindings on my older board, which work and fit just fine.

Anyway, trying my boots on those new bindings, I noticed that there was a significant gap between the outer side of the boot and the inner wall of the binding (see picture attached - up to 2 cm wide, when opposite side of the boot is in contact with opposite inner wall of the binding).

To me, this doesn't look too good. But I'd like to have your opinion on that. Is it actually an issue, and if so, what are the main problem(s) or consequence(s) I might experience because of that. I am guessing poorer force redistribution and overall poorer responsiveness, but I might be wrong.

Thanks for your help

Short answer: You should be on the medium bindings.

Long answer: That much of a gap is going to make the bindings a bit more sloppy even if you really crank down the straps.
Bigger issue is that it might be difficult to center the boot on the board, given that Burton heel cups are not adjustable.
If you cannot get the boots approximately centered than you need the medium size. If the boot position is ok, then it is up to you to decide whether you can live with the extra slop.

Is that a Jones Mountain Twin? I just found a deal on a used Twin Sister earlier this year and pulled the trigger but haven't ridden yet and am excited to try, you like?

As for the bindings they look huge and side to side slop sucks. I had some shitty men's Lamar or LTD bindings or something when I started out and they had like 2 cm each side. I noticed they were a) not responsive and I had to work twice as hard to get the desired effect b) boot slid around in binding as I rode even cranked out and c) I would get a muscle cramp on the outsides of my shins/ankle from the extra forces I needed to apply to tweak the board. Return if you can for the correct size.

They border on dangerous. Could easily loosen and front strap come off. Back

Thanks all for your much appreciated answers. They underpin and strengthen my initial opinion. I'll try to take them back and get some medium size Custom, or otherwise equivalent bindings.

Fewdfreak, it is a Mountain twin. Good eye. Probably as excited as you are to try it! Hope you'll enjoy the ride Hopefully, I'll be able to sort that size issue fast (and hopefully, we'll be getting decent snowfalls in Quebec soon).

Cheers
