My stance change
 
Hello

First of all, I'm 5' 11", 190lbs, UK size 10 boot.
Board in question is my 2011 Burton Sherlock(hard to let it go) 157.
Generally like to freeride, love powder, hit natural kickers sometimes.
From Scotland.

Still bit of a noob on here, but been boarding for 3 years and still experimenting with my stance now and then, seeing what I like best for different situations, and after a recent trip to Austria I managed to video myself a lot to pick up on any faults I have, and after watching videos I could see I was twisting my hips a lot to steer my board, and my back foot on a carve was coming round too much and ruined my carving pattern in the snow I was looking for.
So I found and felt I was standing too straight legged.

So what I've done, at home, is widened my stance, and have found a very comfy position, haven't tested it yet, will be on Thursday, but even though it's very comfy and I feel a lot more in control when I strap my boots in, I worry it may be too wide as it's 27" from centre to centre????
I know it's different and a personal thing, but most people I see are 24" or under.

Just seems wide but somehow feels better, help me out.

How do you even max out at 27"?!?

If you ride powder and freeride a narrower stance would be easier.

Try adjusting the forward lean if you want to knee to bend.

23.5" and under would be a good place to start.

if the back leg is coming around what is the angle of the back binding?

But if you like it more power to you.

the only way to figure out is to try it.
I ride 22 inch stance and I am 5'7 and 30 inseam.
yes wide stance will make you bend your knee a lot but you will also lose some hip range of motion. so experiment more.

Sorry forgot my angles, I'm a duck 15/15.

I was surprised my self at 27", had to recheck it but bindings centre to centre is 27", am I missing something here?.
I was at about 24" in Austria where I felt I had to twist more than shift my weight. Annoying me as I hadn't noticed until I recorded myself.

Will be testing on Thursday, and again on Saturday, does seem very wide to me but feels very at home, could be a different story on Thursday though.

Man something seems off with those numbers. How big of a board are you on? I'm on a 166 and the absolute max I can get with my bindings would be maybe 25.5 inches. Are you measuring center binding to center binding near the inserts or up near the toes?

I thought, I had a really wide stance, when I was using close to 27" (I'm 6'2").

The reference stance for your board is 22" - so you are way, way beyond that. I would expect some board performance issues because of that (i.e. the flex pattern is designed with the reference stance in mind).

IME, carving is more difficult with the wider stance and the negative effect of hip rotation is larger.

It doesn't hurt to try, but make sure to bring tools...

Always got my tools, more do now that I'm playing around with my set up to see what suits.
But yes something does seem off, measuring from exact middle point of binding, not out at toe, or heel, bang in middle. It's a 157 board, bindings can't go much wider, and I've already put a bit of forward lean on my bindings to aid in bending my knees.

Sorry if I'm a bit green here, but only started experimenting with my stance, I can board, I just want to get better.

Just to be sure perhaps you should put your bindings at reference, see if you get 22" when you measure.

It also sounds like you have a technique issue that you're tryng to correct with stance. Maybe a lesson?

Yeah going to do that in morning, I'll take a photo aswell to confirm.

I get a private lesson every few months just to pick up on things/bad habits I may have picked up, last one was November and went well, guy went over transition of weight front and back. I'd always keep getting a lesson as I feel it's always handy to have someone watch and then pick up and explain what could be done better.

Something I have found though, and my fiancée enjoyed this bit, I've always been regular stance, however, getting my fiancée to push me from behind several times, I never have a preferred foot that comes forward first, is it possible I could be goofy and this is affecting me?, even the sliding on sloppy floor technique I use one or the other. We Scottish are funny buggers.
