my board has already some setback. I have in mind to add some more, as I dont do any park, rarely go switch, and love powder.
Question for you experts is: should I increase setback simply leaving the bindings at center holes and move them slighthly towards the tail within their binding's runner, as much as I am allowed? or should I rather push the back binding closer to the tail removing it from center holes and attaching to further back holes, and then modify forward binding accordingly to maintain the stance width?
Board is K2 Podium and bindings Union Data
Fear is that in the latter case I might have too much setback
I tried that in my already set back A-Frame. The ride didn't feel right. So I went back centered and got a pow board that I ride centered as well. Try and see how it feels. It's the best method.
found a video "How to set up your snowboard bindings with Danny Kass" where he does as I did, and it explains that in that way it gives you more room to play with your stance
The problem with trying to create setback is that it usually means that your moving your weight well behind the top end of the effective edge of the board. That usually makes it hard as a bitch to turn --unless your in powder. Because then you are turning off the base of your board and not so much the edges. Another problem is that your boards camber/rocker profile is designed for your feet to be roughly in certain spots. If you setup back behind those spots then you may find it difficult to engage the edges because you are giving up leverage over the front end of the board. It doesn't take much setback to make a board feel like an aircraft carrier.
OP, just try it! We won't be able to tell you how it feels for you. I've set boards up with 2"+ of extra setback (keep stance width the same, only change one thing at a time when changing stance/setup).
yup....another avenue to is to widen your stance...so that you can move your weight fore/aft more. at the home hill, conditions can change very quickly and depending on the run, elevation and how quickly tracked. So all my rides are set up with a relatively wide but center-referenced stance so that it is easier to get on the tail if needed or the nose.
