Default Rome rachet concern

Hey folks, didn't want to start a new thread but couldn't find anything related to ppl having issues with Rome rachets.

The situation: So i just upgraded my 08 Cartels to the new 2011 Rome Targas this past week. I mounted them on my custom and took them to Mont Tremblant (Quebec) this past week. I rode pretty much everything from Greens to Blacks; ice to man made to some natural stuff and some small jumps in the mini park. Prior to the trip I had them set up at my local LBS to dial them in to fit my boot...so I dont think its a setup issue.

The problem: My rachets kept releasing all weekend! It was friggin scary. I'd rachet down and start to ride down the hill...as I'd transition from toe side to heel side I'd realize my response was next to nothing.....i'd skid and turn hard and stop and notice that my ankle strap on my back boot was nearly completely off the ladder. Also, once I bailed on a mini jump and kinda fell...got up and proceeded to ride away only to find my back ankle strap undone again. It wouldn't happen everytime (maybe 25%)...but enough where I'd be paranoid after taking some hard carves or a small jump...to stop and just check the rachets. I had my back ankle strap undo itself multiple times as well as my front ankle strap undo itself once or twice.

What am i doing wrong?!? I realized that the release rachets are SUPER SMOOTH...almost to the point that if i just nudge it upwards it'll release....almost too easy. Maybe my pant cuffs are hitting it? Couple that with the rubber autostrap thingy...that pulls the strap away...maybe its pulling it out? Even so, I cant be riding hard and having fun being so worried that a small nudge will release my rachets...I'm sure ppl on this board have done crazier things and bailed super hard only to find their bindings still tight and snug. For what its worth, my cartel rachets never gave me this problem...I still love the bindings...but I was literally scared...

So the question is...what can I do? Its not like anything is visibly broken to claim warranty...and I cant "prove" this issue to my LBS or Rome unless I take this to the hill with them to re-create the situation.....

Thoughts?

Thanks for the help.

I'd see if there is a way to get your pants cuffs out of the way and go ride again. If the ankle strap continues to come loose, I'd take it to my local shop and email Rome. Funny thing is that I think I read somewhere on this board that someone has a similar situation as you.

You have the targas too?

I will take yours and DC5Rs advice about the pant cuffs...I guess tuck them into my ankle strap. Just to point out tho, my pants aren't huge or OG or anything...lol There is no excess where my boot is.

Are you always making sure that they're ratcheting down fully? On my cartel EST's the toe strap doesn't crank down sometimes, so i always have to check it b4 i go, otherwise, I'll have a similar experience... Doesn't sound like you're having the same problem, but do make sure you check em b4 you go... And I would e-mail rome.

I have the 390 bosses. Same ratchet though. Yeah my pants aren't huge either haha, just caught it i think with snap part on the bottom of the pants when carving.

Be sure to email Rome...they are super responsive.

If at any point they felt like your rachet was faulty, I'm sure they'd send a new one.

call or email Rome right away, that should be grounds for them sending you a new pair of bindings. I heard about this happening elsewhere on the forum so it is not just you. No one should have to worry everytime they jump or carve that their bindings might come undone, thats just not right.

You shouldn't have to "prove" that it happens cause Rome has developed a reputation for having excellent customer service.

Let us know how this all turns out.

^exactly what i was thinking bro...I cant always be worried about my pant cuffs or if i make a hard turn about whether my bindings will come loose..

I took a harder look at the binders and don't know what the problem could be...put my boots into my bindings and cranked all my straps down. All straps are centred and not near the end of the ladders. I proceeded to literally nudge the release leaver and out my ankle strap popped....hrmm...

Called rome warranty and left a msg...no response yet. Is email a better medium to contact them? I figured if I call them...I could describe it better...how did you guys contact warranty?

Give Rome a day to get back to you. It's peak season and they could be swamped. If they don't get back to you within two days, recall and fire them an email as well.

I love Rome's ratchets, super smooth. However, if they are as finicky as you say, I may need to look elsewhere for a new set of bindings.
