Need help with the burton P1.1 bindings

Hey everyone, new to the forum and got some new gear im curious on.

Just had my coldsmoke board with custom bindings stolen a couple weeks ago so i had to get some new gear.

picked up a 2008 vapor for $600 and a pair of 2009/2010 P1.1 bindings for $175
(awesome deals i know right?)

anyways, these P1.1 are alot different from my customs

Trying to set everything up and got some curiosity.
1. There is a retractable string attached to the ankle strap, little confused as to what is purpose is. at first i thought to tie your laces into it? but that seems too wierd
2. The whole ankle strap mechanism is quite different than the traditional ratchet and tighten system i am used to. Anybody have these bindings and able to give me a run through what the main difference and purpose of these parts are?

much appreciated.
