Default 390 Boss/Targas or Unions or TT30s for Bataleon Goliath?

Hey! So I just bought my first board, a 2011/2012 Bataleon Goliath, and now I'm looking for a solid all-mountain binding that matches the stiffness of the Goliath. I've done a lot of researching on this forum and I've narrowed my choices down to either the Rome 390 Bosses/Targas or maybe a pair of Union's or Flux TT30s. I enjoy backcountry freeriding the most, but I also like to ride in the park occasionally and hit small rails and 10-15 foot kickers. My budget is around $150. This will be my very first board, so if anyone could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey cjdarling19

You can really go either way with Targas or 390s for that setup and type of riding. The 390s are more of a mid-flexing binding that will be awesome for free riding and in the park. Many people use them for riding pretty much all types of terrain.

The Targas are going to be stiffer and more responsive, but you get the added option of being able to change the stiffness of the ankle strap with 2 different inserts. You get a stiff flex, medium flex, and then you can run it without any insert at all for the softest flex.

If you're primarily riding in the back country and enjoy some good response, you may prefer the Targas if you'll only be in the park some of the times. It really comes down to preference in terms of flex. For instance, we know of a lot of people that ride the Artifact Rocker, which is a super soft deck, with Targas in the park.

Thank you very much for the info! I think I am leaning towards the 390 Bosses over the Targas, but I want to look into Union bindings a little bit more before I go ahead and order the 390s

Union wise, you'll want to look at the Forces or the Atlas. Force is a little more responsive than the Atlas, while the Atlas is a damper more forgiving binding. Then of course you could jump up to the Chargers if you wanted something ultra responsive.

TBH, I have union mc's, and they dont even come close to my burton cartels. cartels are the go to binding for pretty much everything and I dont even like burton. those and malivitas which is just a slightly softer cartel. but the new switch backs are bataleons actual binding, if that means anything and are also designed for all types of riding. I would go for a stiffer binding and stay away from union. Their a band wagon with no new innovation in my opinion. and are over priced. Well in canada they are.

Nivek, bought a pair of Phantoms for $150 closeout. Looking forward to trying them. The airbag concept seems sick, and I already liked the Blackhawks for my all mountain / bigger mountain binding.

I've read that you need a stiff board for the Targas, otherwise your riding the bindings and not the board. Taking that into account, do you guys think that the Targas will be too stiff for my Goliath? I'm curious as to if the Targas or 390 Bosses will better fit the stiffness of the Goliath and accentuate the strengths of the board.

390's are a wicked binding! You wouldn't regret them! They are a do everything anywhere binding, soft when you want it and responsive when you want it. Honestly the perfect binding, and the warranty that Rome backs is unbelievable!
