What is canting?
The title says it all. I couldn't find a thread on it so thought I'd make one. I have no clue what it means either, which would be the main reason for this thread.

Canting means putting some type of wedge (between 1.5 degrees and 3.5) usually on top of the binding, but sometimes you even see it under the binding or in the boot. The purpose of canting is to align your knees with your feet to reduce stress on them, and also to get better tip control and pop our of rockered (slight u shape) boards. The only way to find out how well it works for you is to try it yourself, some people say they cant feel it, while others can't ride without it. If you can demo bindings with it, them go out there and do it.

from an old goats perspective: we used cants back in the day to get the triangle shaped - knees locked style like Craig Kelly had. We also had narrow stances under 20" A common trick was to wad up trail maps. But later in the early 90's Burton made canting plates for under the bindings.

Hey Nick

There are two main reasons for using canting:

1. You have the ability to direct power precisely to the tail and nose, an advantage particularly for rocker boards.
2. You get an anatomically-correct stance so your knees are spared from strains and tweaks.

We made a video that explains it a little better and how it applies to Rome bindings as well:

Hope that helps.

Pretty good explanation from Ride (made by K2 as I recall).
