First Board Advice...

Im a high school senior from LA and I'm headed to CU for college. I learned to snowboard a few years ago at Breckenridge, only gone 4 other times since then. Ive used my neighbors old K2 board from when he was in high school, it was about the right size, and i have no clue what specific model it was or any of the specs. I love the snow and plan on making very frequent trips up to the Rockies when I'm at Boulder.

This said, I need to find a good board that will perform well. I understand camber and have a good idea of what size it should be. Need help deciding what will work best. Im about 6 foot, 155ish...with hopes i can avoid the freshman 15...

well first it depends what kind of rider you are. do you hit the POW or stick to parks mostly? If you hit the parks get a little shorter board for better control. If you hit the mountain up more I would also say at 155 lbs and 6' get like a 157-159. Like I said though if you hit the parks up maybe a 155-157.

Size is a personal preference thing. I would say your size recommendations fall within a reasonable range. I'm 5'8" 160lbs, my shortest board is a 155 and my longest board (my split) is a 162.

For an all mountain board and his skill level he probably wouldn't want a 159.

154-156 all mountain or all mountain freestyle board. Mid flex. Look up some good boards with that criteria and come back with the ones you like and a few members will break them down for you.

Brands to check out
K2 obviously. Lol
Lib tech
Burton
Ride
Bataleon
Capita
Gnu
ARBOR

Check them out and see what you like.

Yep, just pick up a reasonably priced all mountain board in the mid-150 size range. I wouldn't over think this one as you don't even know what type of riding you'll eventually gravitate toward.

I'd just wait until you got out here and then keep an eye out on CraigsList. CO CL is always full of snowboarding gear.

Another thing to consider is that you'll probably be riding Eldora a lot. Eldora is by far the closest resort to Boulder and I'm pretty sure they offer some pretty smokin' pass deals to CU students.

My suggestions are just nice all around mountain boards that don't cost too much money. They will generally be good for pretty much any type of riding.

Salomon time machine 156

Yes basic 156

K2 Turbo dream 159, this is a really good board but is more expensive than the others, it is also longer because it has a big nose for better float in powder. It rides like the shorter boards on hard snow.

Flow Era 155

Ride Wild Life 155

You don't need to buys these new, if you can find last years models or used near these sizes go for it, they are just examples of boards you should look at.

Thanks for the input guys. I completely forgot about craigslist once I'm up there, thats a pretty good idea if i need some stuff to start out.

So like a 155-157ish all mountain board. I assume that my bindings shouldn't be anything special seeing as I'm just starting out.

My board is going to be my parents "graduation gift", hopefully ill be able to pick one out before winter break and take it up to Mammoth or Tahoe over the holidays and get familiar with it.

I also have some money saved up from working over the summers. Is there any other piece of gear i should invest in early on?

Thanks to everyone who commented!

K2 formula's are about the best deal going in bindings, but if they cost more than 150 brand new they will be good. burton, ride, rome, union flux, nitro all make good bindings and have for a while.

You need boots too. Try on a bunch or order from a site that does returns, i recommend a medium or medium stiff pair just because thats what i like for all mountain and once they break in they get softer. everyone's feet are different, Expect to pay $150-300 for a nice pair.

jacket and pants gloves and under layers all come next,

try to go for 10k rated jacket/pants with taped seams, big deals on last seasons stuff can be had all over the interwebs

gloves or mittens with goretex,

merino wool socks, trust me, smartwool or darntough socks are worth every penny.

non cotton base layers, underarmor or merino wool again.
