Decent equipment if you're just starting out. How many days have you been up? And what style of riding do you enjoy?

Waterproof and breathable (8-10k/10k minimum IMO)jacket and pants.
If you're in colder climates, a baselayer for top and bottom. A balaclava or some sort of face mask.
I like Burton socks.
Wrist guards.
Helmet and goggles.
Gloves or mittens...I prefer gore-tex gloves.
A Dakine or Burton ratcheting tool in case your bindings loosen up.

as a teenager i had a cheap snowboard from wal mart living in the country, I messed around a little bit but i've never actually been to ski resort with "groomed" hills. since i just got a decent board, i havn't gotten a chance to take it out yet. i'm going to Alaska soon and wanted to get the basics together so i would have a good time and not be bother with "oh i wish i had this". Right now the only style i'm doing is free ride. Do you really think a helmet and wrist guards are essential?

Yes to a helmet. You won't die from a broken wrist, but if you haven't learned how to fall properly you could end your season abruptly from just a tiny fall.

+1
wipes are a part of snowboarding, even a small bump on the head could seriously injure you or even kill you...
