Picked up a Jones Aviator Ultra, will I struggle?

Hello all, first post. Love the forum, some great advice on here.

I was super lucky to pick up a Jones Aviator Ultra over this weekend for 50% off ($370) in 158W. More of an impulse buy than anything, as I already had a Capita NAS in 159cm on the way (for only a few bucks cheaper!). I can return either one and wanted to get some feedback from you all before I unwrap one and head for the mountains.

A few notes about me:
  • 6'0"
  • 180lbs
  • Size 10.5 boot
  • "Home" mountain = Tahoe
  • High-Intermediate rider, comfortable riding blacks
  • No interest in the park/tricks/switch, love carving and bombing down the mountain

My question: given my ability level and size, will I struggle with this board or will I be happy and grow into it? I've spoken to a few folks about this board and while they said it wouldn't be their first choice, that it should work for me and it was an incredible deal.

So, if you were me and picked up this board for this price, would you keep it or swap it out for something different? For those of you that have ridden one, will it be a good fit?

Note: I've ordered some Union Force bindings in L/XL and wear ThirtyTwo STW BOA boots. All can be returned.

Thanks in advance!

Hey man,

I've been in this game for a while, and the ultra av is the best board I have ever ridden.

Whenever boards are light, they usually sacrifice dampening, pop, and overall solidness under your feet, but the Jones UA makes it feel super solid and materialized underfoot while still keeping a super duper low weight, as you probably know by now.

If what your interested in is bombing the slopes, the 158W couldn't have been a better choice for your height, weight, and foot size. The extra width will help you get extra low on those carves.

You got it for a steal as well!

Keep it, you will love it!

Thanks for the advice so far, good stuff to think about. Looks like I started up an interesting debate :eyetwitch2:

I'll have the NAS this week and will be able to do a direct compare.

Anyone else have any thoughts about riding the wide version in particular? Here's an image of my boots over the board, placed ~ in stance.

I'm also 6 ft. tall, but 158 would seem too short to me. Then again, I guess its whatever you feel comfortable riding. My board is a 163 and I've been wondering what it would feel like compared to a 165 or 168. I ride similarly to you (no park). I wouldn't personally go as short as 158 for all-mountain riding like you said.

Hm, yeah that's interesting point. Frankly haven't ridden anything longer than a 160. Spoke with the folks at Jones yesterday. They recommended the 160 as "perfect" for me but said the 158 should be cool. The ultra doesn't come in a size longer than 160.

Hey OP!!!!

You'll be fine on either board. The Ultra Aviator is a great board as is the Capita board. Just choose the one you think looks cool and rip that shit.
i suggest op ride the damn thing
Bud, just fucking ride it. It's a board, it'll be great or it won't. We can't tell you if you'll like it. Have fun man, that's what it's all about.
Thanks all! Will do. Can't wait to take it out soon. Looks like some snow coming this weekend ;)

Quick update to this thread: took out the board this past weekend in Spring conditions at Squaw and had a blast. Absolutely love it. No issues with riding a wide, and didn't catch an edge all day. The best board I've ever ridden. Appreciate everyone's advice, happy I kept it.
