Default gear question

ok so I am new to snowboarding and looking to buy some snowboard pants and a jacket. As I was looking at some of these clothes on the DC shoes site I noticed that some of the pants and jackets said 5K,10K and so on, so my question is what does that mean and how do I decide which one to get? Also sorry if this has been covered already, I searched but didn't see anything. So if this has been covered just point me in the right direction

that is the amount of water proofing. 15k tends to be a middle ground for decent waterproofing. 20k+ is really good but tends to be more expensive. its also good to check out the breathability.
