i usually only wear a thermal then a t-shirt under my jacket. if its a little colder ill wear a hoody as well. at the very most ill wear 2 thermals and a hoody if its super cold. i never really needed more then a pair of thermals under my pants.

I'll wear a Hot Chilly 1st layer. On colder days I'll wear a fleece jacket under my shell. For legs, I wear long underwear and again, for colder days I'll put on fleece pants under my shell pants.

1-piece long johns with the but flap!! aka "the union suit" $26 at Walmart.
Probably would be nice to have a fancy thermal base layer made of nasa tech materials, but hey, I'm fuckin broke so this works.. and it keeps the cold off my lower back, where 2-pieces really are lacking.

Other than that, usually a hoodie and a shell/windbreaker - 95% of the time.
Maybe a heavier jacket (with minimal insulation) if it's really cold like -20 Celcius or so. I haven't ever rode with a heavy insulated jacket of any type... maybe it's my body is so adjusted from growing up on the SK/MB border.

for my lower layer i just go with a pair of plaid pj-bottoms. i have a pair of 686 smarty pants that really keep me warm even when its 0 degrees F. also its nice having alot of room down there.

as for my top layer, i wear UA longsleeve, another cotton longsleeve, and a tshirt. then add a sweater once it gets colder
