I hate being 'that guy' and posting this common question, but it's time for a new setup and I'm not in the loop on what the current good brands are! Last time I knew what was going on in the field M3 was a respected brand (if you never heard of them, thats partially the point!)
My wife and I are looking for a new board and boots. We don't have a budget, as long as its 'worth it'.
I am 185lb and 6ft and she is 110lb and 5'2". I currently ride a 158cm M3 and she rides a small Ride that I used to use 10 years ago. Both of us have OK boots and Flow bindings. We love the Flow bindings but are ready for new boots and board.
We are both OK riders. I was a GOOD skateboarder in my youth and currently wakeboard which carried over to snowboarding. So even though I've probably only snowboarded 30ish times in 14 years, I would say I'm pretty good because of the other sports. My wife is decent as well and would probably be considered a beginner with solid fundamentals. We do go down a variety of hills. Everything from double black diamonds at our local flagstaff,AZ Snowbowl to single black diamonds in Colorado and Whistler Vancouver.
1/3 of our riding is off jumps, 1/3 is just going down hills, and 1/3 back country. I recognize that all 3 ideally require different boards! I generally prefer smaller boards for all my board sports, for the fast reacting and nimble feel. Lastly I usually look for last year models to pay discounted rate VS same shit but new graphics.
Can you guys recommend good overall boards or board brands for both of us based on this criteria? Also what brand boots to look at? :hairy::jumping1::jumping1:
Please let us know your foot sizes as well. Rider height is not a factor in board selection but foot size is one of the big two. We will all be happy to make some suggestions for you.
Please measure your feet using this method:
Kick your heel (barefoot please, no socks) back against a wall. Mark the floor exactly at the tip of your toe (the one that sticks out furthest - which toe this is will vary by rider). Measure from the mark on the floor to the wall. That is your foot length and is the only measurement that you will want to use. Measure in centimeters if possible, but if not, take inches and multiply by 2.54 (example: an 11.25 inch foot x 2.54 = 28.57 centimeters).
Ill check out the GNU Choice boards. Does it matter what kind of Choice board they are? There seems to be 'gold', 'aspen' , 'smart pickle' , ass, etc....
Well the reason I said jumps rather than terrain park is that we don't do many rails (yet) and mostly just jumps. Many times they aren't even necessarily inside the part itself. By Back Country I meant in the woods between trees. Like what is between 2 separate runs. Nothing like the feeling of soft & untouched snow. But otherwise, yes an "all mountain" board seems to fit the mold. We try to do everything except for high speed stuff. We both don't care for just 'bombing the hill'.
You can get an extra ~10% off if you buy through ActiveJunky.
It's a great mid ground between the B-Nice and Ladies Choice and at that price. Roxy basically has Gnu/Libtech make their boards. So they are the same tech, quality.
My buddy has the same stats as your wife but has been riding a little longer. She got a GNU B-Nice and absolutely adores it. There have been days she won't shut up about it lol
I'm all for the best functioning board for me, regardless of graphics.......she's gonna be a bit difficult because she wants something with graphics she likes haha
I'm looking for somewhere in the 300's. So basically most any board thats 2015 or older. We just don't go enough per year to justify something more expensive.
Ya, unfortunately they are running pretty low on 2015 stock. Honestly this is about the worst time of the year.
Did she see the Roxy XOXO? It's really a nice board, and the price is killer. I get the whole topsheet thing though having gone car shopping with my daughter and her gravitating to anything blue. The sidewalls on it supposedly glow in the dark too.
I don't have much knowledge on womens gear but Yes makes excellent snowboards. I'd suggest the Greats for you, especially at this price. The Hel Yes may be a bit aggressive for her based on what I've read, but the Emoticon could be an option. I'd take a look at these...
I have Yes Greats and love it. The price is so good right now, too.
If you get it at Evo, you can even take an additional 20% off for the next day or so, which brings it down to like $240.
I got my GF the Yes Hel Yes for Christmas. It's going to be a lot of board for her for her second year, but this will be a board she can eventually ride when she gets more comfortable. I mean, I got it for a little over $200 brand new, shipped, from Evo. I can't complain about that. As Brewtown said, Emoticon would be cool, too. But the price for the Hel Yes is pretty damn awesome, and it'll be a board she can grow into and have for a long time.
Again, for you, I'd recommend the 2015 Yes Greats. It's stiff, yet still very playful. I love the shape of it, it's twin and it's fun as hell to ride. Given you like riding all over the mountain, it would be perfect for you. Get the 158.
Since the prices are so good, you could splurge on other stuff.
Anyone have any comments on how the libtech TRS does in the woods and moguls?
