I'm riding a 165 NS Raptor that my buddy did an awesome job splitting for me now. With all the new short/fat powder boards it got me thinking about using them in the backcountry. I'll probably never ride a board like this at a resort just because I think they would be horrible once things get a little tracked out. In the backcountry where you're only getting 3 or 4 runs in and there's a lot more untouched snow they might be amazing though, especially for maneuverability in tight trees. Does anyone make a short/fat factory split yet? Something like the Yes 20/20? How do you think they would skin with a 210lb guy on a 150-155cm board?
The one concern I would have is skinning with a board that's 280mm at the waist? There's a couple skis out there that are 135+ under foot but has anyone skinned with anything this fat before?
right. For me I think ideally the board would still be 153-155. My resort board for the last 3 years has been a wide 159 it has been fine in the powder.
My split is a 148 Burton spliff. Waist is 254, so not uber wide. I am somewhere over 200 with gear on, and it is a dream come true on the mountain. I actually quite like the short board for kick turns.
That is interesting and shorter than I would imagine (the 148).
I have not ridden in the PNW, am wondering if the floatation is different up there (more dense snow, perhaps) ???
It seems to me that I would want more than 148, especially at a narrower width based on what I am used to (which is limited to just one state). I probably weigh in way under 200 with gear (I hope).
I have a Venture Storm 162, BTW. feels about right, but based on not riding a huge variety of boards in the back-country.
EDIT: I really do notice the wider (than my resort board) width and like it for floatation. The board isn't great for me in tight trees, but tight trees arn't my preferred riding terrain.
I don't ever ride in the continental snow pack, but sometimes we do get champagne snow here. (rarely) My most fun resort pow board is either my fish, or my directional nug (also in a 148).
The only downfall of the small size is when things get choppy, I feel like sasquatch is kicking the crap out of me. I personally have never had an issue with floatation in any snow conditions.
