Pow board that can really carve

I have a high end board that I will be sending in for warranty next month and the replacement will be redundant in my quiver so I'm going to sell it. I've been thinking I perhaps I should finally make the leap and get a pow board, but if it can't rail a mean carve on groomers and hold an edge on ice, I'm not interested because those things are often part of my pow hunting.

The Flight Attendant, PYL, Supernatant, and Open Road are all boards that I think I would enjoy, but I believe they are a little too close to my daily driver which Custom Anniversary (an RCR Burton Custom if you aren't familiar).

If I'm going to get a whole different board, it should actually be really different! Jones Hovercraft comes to mind, but what other options should I be looking at?

I like stable boards so I'm leary of the idea of a super short pow stick. I'm also a camber fan, I'm curious how boards like the Fish or Mod Fish handle on groomers or ice.

Share your wisdom with me!

When I read the first few lines I thought PYL etc. then I saw you had them covered and I thought Hovercraft. So you've got that covered as well? Have you looked at Mig Fullbags boards? They look rad, the Hammerhead in particular gets me going. What about Dupraz? Probably one board its easier for me to get.

Take the leap and get a pow board?? you mean you have more than 1 board an none of em is a pow board? you need to fix that.

Dupraz is not really shaped to optimize carving on ice (edge to board length ratio is pretty poor). It does ok, but waaaay better on good snow. The 6' is better for ice, but too long depending on your size. If you're tall or heavy the 6' could be fine.

Landlord is great on groomers. Size up (for extra edge and float) and have a blast. To put it in perspective: Even the longest LL will be shorter than the shortest D1..... and will have better grip (longer EE, longer camber section, etc). But if the mtn is big, and you going to drop into a mega bowl.... get a D1 :)

Rossi XV has magnetraction. So that should grip.

Fish.... meh. Too wide for it to be super fun on ice. It's still fun, but it's optimized for pow. It's also a size down board so not going to be very stable. When i ride the Fish i don't care whether there's an icy or moguly patch here and there. Cause where it's good it's great. Maybe Mod fish... it's definitely narrower, that could be what you want.

Orrrrr
Do the other end of the spectrum and get a CRC board with magnetraction or something like that. CRC has a lot of edge and feels pretty floaty.

People also say Arbor rocker tech thing works really well.... care to try it?

Yeah the Dupraz, isn't your everyday board. Hahaha in the sense, that there's no other board like it.
It is your everyday board, in the sense that.
That's exactly what it is, the board you ride everyday.
In every condition.

Haha, there's only one shape.
It's optimized for everything.

You want a more hard charging one, that holds a better edge?
Go stiffer.

I had the 5'5 standard & still have 5'5+
They ride totally different.

The 5'5+ or 5'5++ would slay those conditions.

Check out the Fullbag Blunt Diamond. Looks like a blast. I can't get it to upload but if you go to the Fullbag Facebook page there are videos of guy ripping around on groomers and powder with it.

I bought the Hammerhead in spring. Didn't get the chance to ride it yet but it is beautiful and seems well built. I don't think most people are looking for a 171 though. The blunt diamond comes in smaller sizes.

It seems like my original post caused some confusion... to clarify, I currently have two boards on active duty:

A stiff-ass full cambered twin (Aftermath) and a medium flexing RCR directional twin (Custom Anniversary). I do not have a pow board and I live spitting distance from Whistler, Baker and Stevens Pass, so I think it's time I finally fix that :)

Lots of great suggestions here, and many that I had not thought of. Thanks guys!

Why do you need a pow board that can carve? Why not take more than one board to the hill? I take 2 or 3 every time now and leave the others locked in the rack to switch out. Get a pow board for pow and use it that way :) Not that I haven't ridden the dupraz or ultradream on groomers because I have...but in general I match the board to the snow. if you are going to have a quiver you don't need the "jack of all trades but master of none" board. Get a specialty board just for that. In fact....get a Winterstick swallowtail. Can't get any more specialized than that! And besides....all you Chemistry professors rake in the cash so its ridiculous price should be no problem for you :snowboard1::D

The Flight Attendant definitely rails carves and floats very well, it'll also ride quite differently to your Custom Anniversary, especially if you size it bigger. (Speaking from a 162 FA and a 159 Mid flex RCR)

But reading your other thoughts, the first that came to my mind was Korua, as others have mentioned. Never ridden them but seems like they'd tick all the boxes! New Yes Optimistic could be an option as well?

If you have two boards, both camber, both carve well, why make a stink about a pow stick purchase needing to be a great carving board also when you live next to whistler? And SHOULD have a dedicated pow stick. Pony up and get the board you really need for powder and be done with it.

I hear you, but I have a particular philosophy when it comes to resort powder hunting :) ...

You find the best shit by being willing to ride the nasty, windswept entrances that others are not. I'm definitely overdue for a pow stick, but if I can find one that will handle an icy chute to get to the secret goods, all the better!

I am actually in a similar situation to you regarding board choice, but for different reasons. I'm after a board that I can take on trips to Japan and have a blast, but also use on terrible snow days in Australia (which is a lot of them). So anything from soft groomers and deep pow in Japan, to icy off-piste and groomers in Australia.

From my initial searches I'm looking at either an Arbor A-Frame or a Hovercraft. Both seem like they would do the trick for both scenarios, but the Hovercraft is looking more like a Japan leaning board, whereas the A-Frame would be more of an Australia leaning board.

I rode my burton skipjack surf last weekend for the first time on groomers and although I bought it for powder in Japan it carves really well and is loads of fun just mucking about pretty much anywhere on the hill.

I won't get to test it on powder until January.

Hi there, I'm a little late on this but if you're still deciding have you considered a Prior? You're from BC area right?
I have a Prior MFR and really love what it can do. Before I go further I'm nowhere near as experienced as many others here but I have put this board through its paces. It can really carve on the groomers, it loves to bomb, and it's got some taper and stiffness in the tail which helps it sink into the pow.
I am 180/80kg and ride the 162. It has camber between the feet to an early rise rocker to help with float. The early rise also helps you make shorter radius turns than I expected. Flex is about a 7, I can butter on it okay although nose buttering is difficult because of the one inch setback.
This board powers through every kind of snow condition and has great edge hold.
Unfortunately Prior have a reputation for boards delaminating and for mediocre service, but my board has had zero issues.
One final cool thing is you can really customise the board, from the graphics and build to the shape (can go full camber for an ultra carve board, but you'll lose some float).

I know of one.
But it might be hard to find?

The Dynastar/O'riginal Sin 3800
They come in a 163 & 169.

That's what the head snowboard instructor @ my mtn brings when it dumps.

He rides it in the deep with hard boots.
I bought one, then another, just cause he had one.
Tend to watch what he brings on deep days, cause they're usually something I've never seen before.

Hahaha I know you'd never buy it, even if you found one.
That's a shame, cause it's one of my all time favorites.
