If it's not crap it's pretty damn close. Check out Sierrasnowboard and EVO. They tend to have some pretty good packaged deals with higher quality gear.

The malolo is a pintail powder board. Supermodel is also tapered, as a beginner, you will progress faster if you start with a softer freestyle board.

I would pick one out of this list...

Hi James,

Before you lock in to a model or deal it is better to get some ideas of what gear will best suit your size and needs. Getting the wrong gear at a great price is no bargain. Plus, right now, there are mad deals available and you can have it all.

What is your weight and foot size. What area of the country do you typically ride?

Post up that info and we will all find you some sick deals on great gear.

Snowboards

The Ride Control was my first board and it was great to learn on. Dunno your size so it's the whole list. Any of those brands are better than Lamar. Especially Elan. Elan is highly underrated. They manufacture the most snowboards in the world. Approximately 20% of the snowboards that you see come out of the Elan factory. They also own the brand Artec.

Little more expensive

Snowboards

Plenty of affordable Boots

Mens Snowboard Boots

and Bindings

Snowboard Bindings

Little more expensive

Snowboard Bindings

Edit: Do you already know what size you are? If not, post your measurements up. Weight, boot size, and riding style if you know it. WiredSports or myself will build a proper list of gear for you.

If I was starting out, I'd get this deal from Sierra that's right on thier front page:

Snowboard, Snowboards, Burton Snowboards, Burton Bindings, Burton Boots, and snowboard reviews - Free Shipping - US Orders Over $100

Absolutely recockulous deal at $349
