Right Width/Length for My Height and Foot Size

I'm hunting for a new board after taking a 9 year break. I'm nearly 40, 6'1", 165lbs, foot is 28cm long, 10.8-11cm wide. I'll be riding 80% piste and 20% off-piste. So a few questions:

- Do I need a wide board?
- I'm tall enough to ride a 162 board, but I'm kind of light. Should I go for something like a 158 or 160?
- Can you recommend an all mounting, freeride board?

Hi Robit,

28.0 cm is a size 10 in snowboard boots. That is now smaller than the most common male snowboard boot size. "Wide", "Mid-Wide", "Normal" are just marketing terms. They have no specific definition and there is no industry standard for these terms. Your foot size does not require a wider tan average board width.

Rider height is not a factor in board sizing. Additionally, a board's tip to tip length (i.e. 163, 160, 158) is a poor indicator of the rider specs that it was designed for.

So let's start afresh. We know that you are 165 lbs with a size 10 foot. Where do you ride? Any specific models or brands that you are interested in?

I live and ride in Switzerland. I am (was) an intermediate rider but I have only ever owned one board and rented maybe three at different points, and besides some info I have read on this website and others about board profile and riding style, I don't have a large knowledge base from which to draw. I have been looking at the Nitro Blacklight, Burton Custom, and Nidecker Platinum.

Got it,

In the Burton Custom I would suggest 158 cm. It is designed for 145-185 lbs. / 66-84 kg which has you perfectly centered in it's weight range at 165 lbs. Your foot size 280 is a great match for the board width (26.3 at the reference inserts). That custom is a really fun board that has been around forever. Now you just need to decide, Camber or Flying V. Personally I would go Camber for the Alps but that is, of course, up to you.

I agree that you are a size 10 boot, and I also don't think you need a wide. I'm also about to buy a new board, have been reading reviews and forums for like 40+ hours the past weeks.
Have a look at these popular boards:

Yes - Pick Your Line
Jones - Flagship
Burton - Flight Attendant
Burton - Landlord

I'm too new here, cannot post links, so you'll need to use google for this:

Check out this (seems to be a very knowledgeable man writing reviews):

and also this for reviews:

I think size 160-162 should be the right fit for you for a all-mountain-freeride board
