Yes The Greats vs GNU Space Case 2017

Hello everyone,

I need some advice on what gear I should go for this year as I feel it's time to move on from my old burton The farm. I really want to start some mid-class freestyle (no bigair jumps etc), sort of treat the mountain as a playground. I like to carve, i like to ride with certain speed (but not super-speed) but also have a bit of fun from jumps and presses. Never go into powder. I came across these 2 boards:

- YES The Greats UnInc 2017 156cm
- GNU Space Case 2017 156cm

(also considered NS Prototype2 but its out of stock)

I already got Union Contact PRO bindings and I am also not sure wether to keep them or return them for this type of board. My question is which one would be more suitable for me. I know I will have to sacrifice some speed on GNU for more fun yet The Greats from what I found over the internet seems more stable all around board however you need to put some effort to have fun with it

Also I was thinking about changing my Burton Ruler shoes but have no clue if I should go for stiffer or softer boot with that kind of setup :embarrased1:

What do you think ?

Though your comparing similar style boards the Greats has a RCR profile and the Gnu a CRC. I like both but some people much prefer one over the other - see the recent Proto thread for more info. I'm not sure what profile the Farm has but I'm guessing it's Camber, if so this means that the Greats will ride the closest out of the two. You can't really go wrong with Yes and everybody seems to love the Greats. I don't know much about Union bindings but I'm pretty sure the Contact Pros would work well with either board.

I own a Space Case with Union Contact bindings. It's outstanding. My only hesitation with it is very icy conditions. Everywhere else, it's playful when you want it to be but holds a line when you want it to do so. It's damp enough for the chop, and good in a straight line/flat basing. When it's icy, though, I take something else, despite the magnetraction. It's a good all-mountain freestyle board, in my opinion, and not just a freestyle board that is also ok for occasional use outside the park.

I really wanted to try out a Greats as well, but there were no demos available. Because hybrid camber boards are so variable (I've ridden a few and own a few), I couldn't just buy one without trying it. I already have a C2 profile lib-tech board, so the Space Case, with its XC2 profile, wasn't a huge leap of faith without a demo.

That's one I can't answer without an explanation.

For me, it's a no-go as an only-board because aside from trips to the mountains, I'm at the local hill 2-4 times per week (on average) and the conditions there are all over the map (very icy, lately). For hard/packed snow, under my feet, the Space Case is OK, but when there's a lot of ice I just prefer to go with something else. Yes it has magnetraction but it's not as effective as the magnetraction on other boards that I've ridden/own. When the snow is good, though, unless I really feel like doing just one specific thing (like carving all day long), the Space Case is my pick 8-9 times out of 10. If I take more than one board with me, it's always one of them.

All of that said, I would expect that The Greats would work better as a "one board to rule them all" type of board than would the Space Case -- just because *in my experience* rocker-camber-rocker can have a little bit more (or a lot more) stability and hold in the really hard/icy stuff than camber-rocker-camber, while still being playful enough all of the rest of the time. Of course, your mileage may vary.

If I could only have one board, for everything from ice to powder, the Space Case wouldn't be the one I'd keep (given the amount of ice-riding I'm doing lately). If I could only have two boards, the Space Case would definitely be one of the two.
