Ok, so today I´ve been riding my 2016 159 Process Off-Axis back to back with a 2016 158 Custom Camber. Both set at the same stance width and 15/-15 angles. Malavitas on the Process, and Cartels on the Custom.
What I find strange is that it feels easier to press on the Custom compared to the Process, even though the Custom is rated as a stiffer board. Also, the intended weight is the same for both boards.
The Custom feels smoother to press as well. Tech-wise they seem pretty similar apart from the Off-Axis bit and the base, does anyone else have the same experience? I actually swapped my Process for the Custom today with the guy I borrowed the board from.
Tech wise they also have different fiberglass, "Triax" for the process and "45 degree carbon highlights" for the Custom. Haven't ridden the Process but recently bought a new Custom Camber and absolutely love the board, so snappy and poppy with the perfect mid flex for me
I noticed that as well after i posted this. It´s probably also the reason the Custom is a lot heavier than the process (relatively speaking). I was doing some 180s on the Custom, and was wondering if I was more sluggish than usual.
Loving my move from the Process to Custom, although it feels like I´m riding more in the back seat for now, I´ll have to make some adjustments.
The off axis is the pure pop profile which is the Burton version of RCR - different from the straight up camber of the custom. So they will definitely feel different from that alone.
Yep, I know. That makes me even more confused, as it´s rockered (or flat rather) at the ends of the camber. Coupled with a softer flex rating, I would assume presses would be easier. It´s not night and day between them, but I just find the Custom easier to press on. It might just be me though.
In the end, it doesn´t really _matter_, but I just found it really weird!
I´ve just had one day on the Custom now, and the conditions were really wet (amused myself with tailpressing over some huge puddles). Couldn´t really lay into it. Will get 2-4 days on it this week, and can comment then!
The Custom feels more damp than the Process at least, so in that respect it´s livelier if that´s what your definition is. On powder days I´ve started out on my Flight Attendant, and when I switched to the Process later on in the day. It was slightly intimidating how much the Process bounced around compared to the FA.
Completely forgot to mention; the Custom is quicker edge to edge. If i´m not mistaken, the Process is a mid/wide board, so there´s a bit more leverage needed to get it up on its edge. Nothing major, but definitely noticeable, especially at lower speeds.
I think that you should compare the Process off axis 157 or even the 155, not the 159 with the Burton Custom 158. Typically you ride twin boards with a smaller size than you ride directional boards. The off axis is a twin and the Custom is a Directional twin so this will have some differences in the build process of both boards and that's why you feel differently under your feet.
Never thought of it that way, thanks for the insight. Unfortunately I live nowhere near any shops or some resort that will have decent gear to demo, let alone demo days. So I´m limited to my own quiver and whatever friends have lying about.
I give you an example. I rode 2 customs flying V, a 158 and a 154.
From reviews I saw, people were complaining about the high speed chatter that the nose did when riding in higher speeds.
I notice that in the 154 but i didnt notice that in the 158. If a heavier rider was riding my 158, he would probably notice the high speed chatter as well.
