When it comes to speed how much difference does a certain board really make? I understand that different boards are more stable at speed and more damp.
But if you take the stability issues out of it, does one board really go that much faster than another or does it all mostly depend on the rider?
sintered vs. extruded, waxed vs nonwaxed does certainly make a difference in certain cases. Most of the time though unless you are talking about speed on flats it comes down to the rider. The majority of people aren't limited by the max speed their boards can achieve, but rather their skill and balls. Obviously a more stable/damp board will make a rider feel more comfortable in that situation
The longer the board the more stable it is (considering same make and model, a park board at 156 probably won't be more stable than an actual freeride board at 154). This will usually allow someone to go faster (this leads more to redlude's point).
There are certain boards, however, that are just designed to go fast. Alpine boards (race boards) are basically just built for going fast down a hard packed groomer. These are pretty specialized boards though, I've seen a couple but not many out on the slopes.
